'Tooling Up! at the South Australian Museum

Picture
Adze museum case
Some of the artefacts in this exhibition, made from a combination of discarded twenty first century technologies and natural materials, were first displayed at the South Australian Museum in 2007 under the title of 'Tooling Up!. Their hybrid nature conceptualise the possibility of a clash of civilisations or some post apocalyptic event, but also suggest that the notion of primitiveness is relative. This collection, curated from the SA Museum display, has additional items though of as SMS sticks that were added to the collection in 2014.

Tooling Up at the South Australian Museum 2007

"Hayward’s museologically inspired forms, amalgamated with iconic exemplars of more recent technology (the mobile phone, the computer mouse, and so forth) show us an artist with a seriously playful streak." (Nicholls 2007:50)

These artefacts are a recent addition to the collection. Thought to have been a primitive form of communication used to send simple messages. Newmarch Gallery, Prospect, SA. Jan 28th - Feb 26th 2022.
